Chanel Malice & Formula X The System Sephora 500 Point Perk Review & Swatches

I recently got the Sephora Formula X The System 500 Point Perk to play with. I was due to paint my nails, so I chose Chanel Malice. Yes, it’s not a new color, but I figure I will review each nail shade I own as I paint them each time.

I normally use Orly Bonder Base Coat and Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat. I’ve been curious about Formula X products and had the chance to get the free set, so it was worth a try. The set has four minis, all 4ml each. The Nail Cleanser is the first step, this reminds me of the OPI Chip Skip I use for the same purpose. You can also just use nail polish remover to get rid of the oils which makes your polish last longer. Next is the Base Coat, then a creme polish Impeccable described as a cocoa bisque, lastly the Top Coat. The color Impeccable in the set wasn’t for me, but I used the rest.

Chanel Malice was I believe from 2012 that fall or holiday collection. It’s a deep ruby red with subtle shimmer, as per usual Chanel style. They have great subtle shimmer in their polishes. It usually shows up on your nails less visible than in the bottle though, as you figure out the more you use Chanel. I love Chanel polishes, the colors are unique and trend setting. They are pricey, and not as good of a formula as like OPI. They just don’t last as long without chipping. For me, because of the unique colors, it’s worth it.

Swatches on my arm:

On my toes after almost a week:

You can see some of the chipping has started at one week as well as the subtle shimmer is less apparent on nails than in the bottle. As far as the Formula X stuff goes, the Nail Cleanser is just like OPI Chip Skip or nail polish remover. I don’t see anything special about it, I wouldn’t switch over to it as it’s not any better than the other two. The Base Coat was OK, it didn’t make my polish last any longer than the Orly Bonder Base Coat. It actually had more chipping on the ends than Orly. The Top Coat was just as glossy as Seche Vite, and like the Base Coat, chipped more than Seche Vite.

I did notice the Formula X set with Chanel just gave me chipping. When I use the Orly Bonder and Seche Vite with Chanel, I get this odd phenomenon where a whole nail polish section just comes off. So, it’s hard to describe, but one day a whole pinky toe is just plain, it never chipped or anything it just came off as one piece. Sometimes half of a nail piece comes off, or a whole. Never chipping just that weird effect, which also only happens with Chanel, not OPI or other brands I’ve tried. I also notice it only happens when I’m wearing socks and boots in the winter, I think the moisture in my shoe does it. This only happens on my toes, not my nails. Now that I have a dishwasher again I’m going to have to start painting my nails again. Overall, the Formula X stuff wasn’t bad, I just prefer my usual more. I will probably test the Formula X stuff some more with OPI and some other brands as well.
