Sunscreen Round Up: 2020

Time for the annual sunscreen round up. This is all the ones I've purchased since the last Sunscreen Round Up Post last summer. This year I wanted to test a more wide variety and unique sunscreens. I usually go for Korean or Japanese ones because the US is so far behind in filter technology. This year I grabbed a lot more European sold brands plus I did add in some US more medical grade ones like elta MD, Skinbetter, Sente and the new to the US Alumier. I did try to focus on alcohol and fragrance free in most of them though I did get a few exceptions to try. I'm not going into specific filters as there are so many who do that better than me, this is about texture and feel on the skin and overall impressions. Minus two (SPF 40 and 46) these are all SPF 50 or above. Sunscreen is the most important thing you can do for anti-aging and it's the most vital part of your skincare routine. If you're not using sunscreen daily you're just wasting your money on skincare. I will work on another post after this going over some of my all time favorites and I really want to redo my physical versus chemical sunscreen post with more of my current thoughts and some basics on how sunscreens work. But that's for another day.

So I'll start with two favorites by Purito. I already talked about the original Purito sunscreens last year but they have launched exactly what I hoped for--Fragrance and essential oil free versions. Hands down these are some of my favorite sunscreens on the market. They are extremely affordable and just really really good. Purito Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF50+ PA++++  is a chemical sunscreen. It has soothing centella asiatica, no fragrance and no white cast. I love how it doesn't dry my skin out like a mineral but it's also lightweight, not greasy or too heavy. It's not the lightest weight fluid but it's not a heavy lotion by any means. It's more of a satin finish lotion. Purito Comfy Water Sun Block SPF 50+ PA++++ is a super lightweight mineral sunscreen. It's fragrance free now which was such a huge improvement. This one manages to be white cast free for me but as with mineral sunscreens they may not be white cast free for POC. This one is untinted. It has a very light texture and finish on the skin, sinks in quickly and has a mattifying effect. This one is not hydrating. If you need more hydration layer it over a more hydrating cream. I love this one in the summer due to it's mattifying effects. This is Ella's face sunscreen, I'm on tube three of the unscented as we use it so much. This one can pill on occasion but I find if you do two light layers and let them sink in versus one heavy layer you can avoid this. Hands down have and would repurchase both.

Earth's Recipe Waterful Sun Gel has been on my list to try forever. It's a chemical sunscreen with a super light fluid texture. It's white cast free, sinks in quickly and is not heavy at all. It feels like nothing on the skin. I had no idea they used San Pellegrino mineral water in this until I looked at the inci list. I loved everything about it minus the perfume fragrance. It's too heavy for me. For an alcohol free sunscreen this is fabulously light on the skin. It's probably the best alcohol free fluid I've tried because it manages to be so light and not greasy. I just really wish they removed the fragrance in it. I will use this on my body but would not repurchase. I don't know why I didn't try the Fresh Sugar Sport Treatment Sunscreen SPF 30 years ago. It's a water resistant chemical sunscreen stick that's multi-use but I love it on the lips. Why did this get discontinued? I don't know. If you can find it it's lovely. I grabbed two Bioderma sunscreens I had heard were nice. These ones are not sold in the US so I did have to get them shipped to me from Europe. Photoderm Max Milk SPF50+ also known as Lait, is a rich milky chemical sunscreen lotion. It's fragrance and alcohol free with no white cast minus the heavy milky lotion part. It's pretty rich for a lotion and actually too rich for me. I could not use this on my face without feeling greasy. This is for dry skin and I will use it on my body this winter but not repurchase. The site lists it as water resistant. Photoderm Max Aquafluid SPF50+ has a very lightweight fluid texture. It's a chemical sunscreen plus it's fragrance and alcohol free. It has no white cast. It says this is supposed to be mattifying and dry touch but I did not get that from this sunscreen. It's really light in texture but it's actually really quite hydrating. I don't feel it's mattifying or dry touch at all. I actually think it's too much for me to use in the current hot & humid summer weather for me. This is more of a winter sunscreen for me. I have to revisit this in the winter as to whether or not I would repurchase. I like it but I like Klairs and Purito more. It's listed as water resistant.

Galderma Actinica Lotion was a random buy after seeing it on the internet. Apparently they're from the same company as Cetaphil and Differin. It's fragrance and alcohol free as well as a chemical sunscreen. It took one use for me to know this wasn't for me. It's so heavy. It looks like a lotion in texture but it's very rich and moisturizing. I subbed it for a cream one day and it was still too much for me. It also oddly has a little white cast at first but it goes away. This one was an easy no for me. Only if you're dry and you like a rich sunscreen, plus sub it for a lotion/cream. If you like a mega-watt dewy glow this is for you. Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA++++ is a sunscreen I heard rave reviews about and grabbed last year. This is an alcohol free chemical sunscreen. It has a light water based gel lotion texture. It's never greasy and leaves no white cast. It does have orange and chamomile oils but the fragrance overall is so light is not bothersome at all. It's never heavy and quite honestly it's a really phenomenal sunscreen. Plus it's got niacinamide, panthenol, beta-glucan, allantoin, vitamin E and sea buckthorn oil. An easy favorite and I see why it's so popular. I would repurchase.

EVY was this new brand I discovered this year. It's a Swedish brand that provides a sunscreen mouse with a new technology and is designed for an active outdoor lifestyle. Supposedly it sinks into the first layer of the skin versus sitting on top which makes it rub proof. It's also ultra-water resistant and lasts six hours. I grabbed the SPF 50 versions for adults and kids. Evy Sunscreen Mousse Spf 50 has a very light airy texture obviously. It's super fun to use. It's a chemical sunscreen with no white cast. It's supposed to be non-greasy, leave no residue, be smudge free and not clog pores. It's fragrance and alcohol free. I found this takes a good 20-30 minutes to really sink into the skin in order to not have a sticky feeling. After that it does feel like nothing on the skin, but it's fairly sticky before that. I would just say don't apply this then go roll around in the sand on a beach right away. It'll probably stick to you. It is hard to determine how much you need to use in order to get the right coverage. The site says one golf ball for an adult arm. I have found the mousse can slip off the hand and fall off if you're not careful, so it's definitely very fun, but it takes a while to get used to how to apply it.

I've tried using one light layer than another on my face and that works well. I heard some people didn't like this brand while others did. I've used it on Ella and I in the pool in the backyard and it seemed to protect us both fine. No burns. I do find here in Texas it takes a bit to really dry down but once it does it's pretty weightless. Because it's so ultra-water resistant I would wash really well at night as sunscreen and sweat clogs pores despite the claims. I enjoyed mine so far and I do plan on testing it for a beach run, we just haven't been yet. I used the Mousse 50 on my face as EVY says it's OK to do so, though there is a face version with more moisturizing ingredients in it so I'm sure I'll grab that one eventually. I do like how this isn't heavy or greasy once it fully sets. I haven't tested the six hours claim, most brands say you need to reapply sunscreen every two hours or more often when in the water. I'm not sure I would even want to test six hours at the beach with just one application. I would consider repurchasing but this needs more testing. By the end of the year I'll have a better idea. I did notice no difference between the kids version and the regular SPF 50 I grabbed.

Alumier is a medical grade brand that just launched in the US. Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF 40 is a mineral tinted sunscreen. It has a lotion like medium weight texture and an almost non-existent tint. It says tinted but it's a very minimal pink tint, it looks mostly white. It's alcohol and fragrance free. This does leave a white cast that goes away after a while but I can't see this working on a POC. It's also pretty hydrating for a mineral sunscreen. I find most drying but this one is not. I couldn't use this one in the summer, it will be more of a winter sunscreen. Overall this one was just OK for me, I will use it up but probably not repurchase as there are other minerals I like better. SENTE is another medical grade brand. Invisible Shield Full Physical SPF 52 is a mineral sunscreen that comes in tinted or untinted version. I have the tinted version which is a pink beige tint. The tint is a little odd compared to most because it's so pink but it works. I absolutely adore this mineral sunscreen. It's really nice. It comes out as a light lotion texture, it's fragrance and alcohol free. It's not heavy or greasy, sinks in well and it's also not super drying like some other mineral sunscreens. This one doesn't pill ever. I get no white cast because it's tinted but I feel even the untinted version would be low white cast. I'm not sure this would work on a POC, maybe lighter skin tones but not darker. I love how light this is while not being drying, I would absolutely repurchase it.

Skinbetter Science Sunbetter Tone Smart SPF 68 Sunscreen Compact was one of the best multi-purpose sunscreen products I bought this year. It's a tinted mineral sunscreen compact. The tint self adapts a little. This is perfect as a portable touch up sunscreen for one plus it makes a fabulous primer for makeup. You can do a light layer of like the elta MD UV Clear then do a layer of this followed by makeup. It doesn't leave a white cast on me and is both alcohol and fragrance free. It does have a light silicone feel to it but it's not heavy or greasy feeling at all. It doesn't make me oily by the end of the day like some silicone primers or products can. I get no white cast either. It really is a fabulous product with multiple uses. I would repurchase. elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 is a mineral tinted sunscreen that has an ultra lightweight texture. I get no white cast plus it's fragrance and alcohol free. It's affordable, sinks in quickly and never feels heavy or greasy. It does help mattify the skin as well so it's great for summer and oily skin. It's a bit less mattifying than the Purito mineral. It may leave a white cast on POC I'm not sure. This one feels like nothing on the skin. It can pill on occasion but this is solved with doing two light layers and allowing them to sink in versus a heavier single layer. I love this one and it's as good as everyone says. It's easily my favorite elta MD sunscreen and I would repurchase.

I bought four other European sunscreens to test. Ultrasun Face Fluid SPF 50+ Antipollution Face Fluid is a hybrid mineral and chemical sunscreen. It's fragrance free and has a hint of alcohol but it's very low on the inci list and doesn't seem to affect the product at all. It's not drying at all. It has a light fluid texture plus has extra anti-pollution technology and antioxidants like vitamin C. It has some white cast at first but this goes away on me quickly. It may not work for POC for that reason. I find it light, dewy and hydrating in finish. This is more of a spring/fall/winter sunscreen for me, it's a tad too dewy for the height of summer for me in Texas. I might go over their range more next year and see if there's another I like more, I will use this one up but not sure if I can find a better one for me from their range. To be continued. Mesoestetic Light Water Antiaging Veil is a lightweight fluid hybrid chemical and mineral sunscreen. It's alcohol free but it has fragrance. The fragrance actually is pretty high in this one, more of a perfume scent. It's not the worst ever, but it's not my preferred level of fragrance. This has a light fluid texture that's almost kind of whipped. It's light and airy though it does have a slight white cast that fades quick. Mesoestetic does have UVA, UVB, HEV (blue light) and IR protection plus it has hyaluronic acid and a collagen booster. It's lightweight and not heavy or greasy especially for being alcohol free. It's not the lightest weight fluid as it is hydrating but it's not heavy or greasy by any means. It's got a dewy satin finish. I can use this in the summer, it's honestly a really nice formulation minus the fragrance. I will use it up and see how I feel about repurchasing after.

Heliocare 360 Mineral Tolerance Fluid is an extremely fluid textured mineral sunscreen. It's ever so slightly tinted, alcohol and fragrance free. For an SPF of 50 and mineral it actually has a minimal white cast that goes away. This won't be true for POC but it's lighter than other mineral sunscreens. I wish the tint was a touch darker. Heliocare protects against UVA, UVB, HEV and IR-A plus it has antioxidants such as ferulic, caffeic & vanillic acid, Vitamin C, E and green tea extract. This has a dewy finish but it's not heavy or greasy because it is so fluid. I can use this in the summer if I layer over a more lightweight or minimal moisturizer. I can't use this over a heavier lotion in the summer. Ultimately I prefer this as a more spring/fall/winter sunscreen. For the summer I would rather use Purito mineral, elta MD UV Clear or the SENTE as this one is a bit more hydrating than these ones. I would repurchase. Heliocare 360 Water Gel SPF 50+ is a water gel fluid chemical sunscreen. It has the same UVA, UVB, HEV and IR-A protection, antioxidants and it's alcohol free. For being alcohol free it's surprisingly lightweight and has a satin matte finish. It does have some light fragrance but it's pretty faint and non-bothersome. It has no white cast and is water resistant. This is the most lightweight fluid of the European bunch and is probably my favorite. I was really impressed with the Heliocare ones I tried.

Overall, the most innovative and fun is the EVY and Skinbetter. I didn't care as much for the Alumier, Bioderma, Actinica or Earth's Recipe mainly due to either heavy fragrance or heavier textures. Heliocare was my favorite of all the European fluids (Heliocare, Ultrasun, Mesoestetic) but honestly all these brands were really solid and decent formulation wise. It was really only fragrance and hydration level that put them below the Heliocare for me. I did split face test Heliocare Water Gel and Mesoestetic and while Heliocare sinks in quicker and feels less dewy at first, a few hours later they feel about the same on the skin. Purito and Klairs win for being the best and most affordable, their textures are phenomenal. SENTE and elta MD were the best lightweight tinted mineral sunscreens of this bunch. Their textures are just really beautiful. If you have any questions comparing these to others texture wise or other questions just ask. I got these from 50ml, Care to Beauty, Face the Future, Amazon, YesStyle, Harben House & Beauty Tap. Though I see Selfridges, Look Fantastic now sells some of the European ones.

  1. Ultrasun is my preferred sunscreen during all seasons in cool Northern European climate. For my combo skin, it's decently moisturizing, depending on skin condition it feels more or less emollient. It sinks in quickly, leaves no white cast on my light skin. I appreciate liposome encapsulation technology and antioxidants they included in the formula.

    1. I totally see why it would be a fav in your region 💗 Sadly it’s like 95 degrees and 60-90% humidity here right now 😭 So it’s a better cooler weather one for me here
