EVY Technology: Overview

By now you have seen me post about EVY Technology sunscreen many times. EVY is a Swedish brand with a revolutionary sunscreen mousse based on patented medical skincare technology that has been manufactured in Sweden since 1999. Details per EVY:

EVY’s patented formula has several unique features that give you superior protection. It forms a protective barrier that enhances your skin’s natural defenses. The mousse spreads throughout the top layer of skin, instead of staying on the surface which many creams do, and it doesn’t rub off, whether you swim, sweat, or dry yourself with a towel. This means you get very long-lasting protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Our products also protect your skin from heat, wind and water stress as well as skin irritants such as chlorinated or salty water, algae, or soap.

EVY is specially developed for sensitive and hypersensitive skin...The products are also recommended for people with sun eczema, sun allergy or albinism. Since the mousse does not need to be re-applied as often as a regular sunscreen, and also retains its protection despite repeated swimming and towel drying, it’s excellent for children. The gentle formula also makes it suitable for very young ones, from the age of 6 months onwards.

They have a patent for their technology (of course wouldn't you?). I think their description, even though long, helps you understand the level of their technology. It ultimately has to do with the base of their products which is a semi-permeable barrier that helps keep your barrier intact. Their products have this barrier film that stays on the skin. It's interesting stuff for sure.

Description of the Patent

This skin preparation has a wide area of applications, even against corrosive substances such as concentrated acid and for treatment / protection against nickel allergy. It is beneficial to use as a carrier for active ingredients, such as sunscreens, skin anesthetics, fungicidal agents, bactericides etc.

The base formula creates an osmotic membrane, i.e. a semi-permeable membrane in the skin. It protects skin against the effects of harmful substances and also helps the skin to recover from any damage. The formula contains both lipophilic and hydrophilic components in two phases. Thanks to this, the formula works simultaneously on several levels in the skin. This two dimensional filter membrane reinforces the skin’s natural properties instead of adding extra substances to the skin to relieve symptoms.

The formula’s lipophilic components prevent immediate contact between water and water-soluble substances and the treated skin’s hydrophilic parts, thus preventing drying of the skin. During use hydrophilic centres also appear in the lipophilic regions in such a way that normal sweating has basically no effect and, through the osmotic membrane, the skin’s natural ability to maintain an even balance between outflows and inflows (of e.g. moisture and heat) is restored. The formulation of this invention doesn’t add any excess oil to the skin and is therefore completely smudge-proof and free from any feeling of residues left behind. At the same time it penetrates deeper into the skin, which consequently has a more deep-acting effect than traditional skin creams. Another great advantage is that the continues for a long time, even after washing.

By now I've tried pretty much their whole range. The biggest claims are 6 hours sun protection without needing to re-apply. So think long lasting protection even with water, sweat and rubbing exposure plus being great for sensitive skin. EVY is well known and revered in Sweden for it's claims and many sports teams use their products. Some basics to know about the brand are it's fragrance, alcohol and preservative free so it works well for sensitive skin. It's long lasting, which you gathered, plus instead of sitting on the top layer of the skin which can smear off easy, Due to technology EVY is able to sit into the top layer of the skin--making it less prone to rubbing off. That's what helps it's 6 hour lasting claims versus the average two.

I'm not a cosmetic scientist only a blogger and tester of their products. If you have more in depth questions about their technology definitely ask them. I have tested a majority of their products at this point. So I can give you my thoughts on those. This is a sunscreen mousse texture wise which is interesting enough alone. No one else does that texture wise. They use some of the newer more advanced chemical filters available in the EU versus the US which tend to be less irritating on the skin, they do use a few of the US approved ones as well. They have a large variety of products all based on that patented mousse technology. We'll start with the best--their sunscreens. They have different SPF levels in each main category. I've tried each category. There's the Sunscreen Mousse in SPF 10, 20, 30 & 50. Then there's the Sunscreen Mousse for Kids in SPF 30 & 50. There's the Daily UV Face Mousse in SPF 30 & 50.

The Sunscreen Mousse is very water resistant, comes in a 100 ml bottle. I have only tried the SPF 50 version and I prefer this as a body sunscreen for myself. If you want a really water resistant version of their sunscreen this is it. It can be a little bit sticky but I would use it as a face sunscreen if I was going outside at the beach all day. This would be my pick for a face water resistant sunscreen as it's a bit less tacky than the kids version. The tackiness only lasts 30-45 minutes. Honestly after that it's pretty comfortable on the skin and eventually just feels satin matte with that protective film feel. This and the kids version are the least moisturizing as they lack some of the hydrating ingredients the face mousse has. It has Octocrylene, Uvinul A Plus, Avobenzone, Tinosorb S & Uvinul T 150 for UV filters plus collage, silk, vitamin E and C.

Ingredients Aqua. Butane. Octocrylene. Propylene glycol. Palmitic acid. Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate. Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane. VP / Hexadecene copolymer. Stearic acid. Isobutane. Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine. PVP. Ethylhexyl Triazone. Polysorbate 20. Triethanolamine. Hydrolyzed silk. Hydrolyzed Collagen. Tocopheryl acetate. Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate Glycerin. Dimethicone. Propane.

Directions Shake the bottle and hold it upside down so that no extra gas escapes. Push gently to get the desired amount of mousse. It’s better to take smaller amounts more often. Rub the mousse between your hands so that it becomes more liquid-like and massage it thoroughly in each area of the body. A handful covers an adult’s arm, approximately. If you have used the right amount of mousse, it should be dry in about 5-10 minutes. If it dries out faster, you’ve used too little (or you have dry skin and need more mousse). If you can still feel the mousse after about 10 minutes, you can rinse off excess with water without losing any of the protection. 1 bottle is enough for about 7 full applications for an adult size body. Don’t forget to let the mousse dry thoroughly before bathing or putting on clothes. Reapply frequently.

The Sunscreen Mousse for Kids is developed for the most sensitive ones. It's very water resistant as well. Compared to the regular Sunscreen Mousse this is a larger size at 150 ml bottle and it's a bit more tacky on the skin. Minor shifting in the ingredients and no collagen, silk or vitamin C. So it's the most minimal formulation. I've tried the SPF 50 version only. This is my go to for us as a family. If we're going out for a day at the zoo or park everyone gets this applied on the body. During my kids splash days at school (outdoor water park fun in summer school) this is what I put on her for those days. In the Houston heat and sun I trust this one. It's performed well for us and lasted longer than 2 hours. Now I haven't tested it for a full 6 hours in the sun as I'm never in water or sun for 6 hours solid. For like a zoo day or whatever I never burn using this once and we spend maybe 4 hours out. If we were water or beach going I would likely just reapply around 4 hours anyway just to be safe. I feel pretty good with 6 hours doing non water outdoor activities though. Same UV filters.

The Daily Defense Face Mousse is my ultimate favorite from the brand. Designed for the face this sunscreen mousse has added HEV/Blue Light protection claims. It has antioxidants and plant extracts (water lily) added plus moisturizing ingredients like urea (they all have glycerin and dimethicone). This one has the silk, collagen, vitamin C and E as well. It's the most moisturizing of the bunch and could be a moisturizer for more combo skin types. It's long lasting with their six hours but not water resistant like the others. This one is the best basic daily facial sunscreen while the others are better for outdoor activities. It's dewy but ends up with a more satin dewy finish in the long run. It's non-drying and doesn't sting my eyes. Same UV filters. The bottle is only 75 ml so it's the smallest and the most costly but it's heaven if you have dry skin. Even though the bottle is smaller I find it lasts a really long time. No white cast it's completely clear. It's one I can put on in the morning and feel protected for the day. It's a fantastic daily SPF product and one of my Top 3 for sure. I have tried both the SPF 30 and 50 but I go into differences more at the end.

EVY has a Daily Repair Mousse which is SPF free. It a foam moisturizing barrier repair and protectant type product. From what I understand this is the base of their sunscreens and the patented product. I like it as a hand cream and I've used it as a facial moisture barrier as well. It's interesting. Not emollient enough to be like a cream (I find I'm dry a few hours later if I use just this only) but it's nice as a more protective barrier. I need to try it more this winter to see how it may fare combined with other barrier products. It has a barrier film kind of feel to it so I could see it being good for irritation. I'm going to take it to work this week and see how it goes as a mask irritation protector, I haven't tried that yet either. Stay tuned. Details per EVY:

EVY’s medical technology formulation mimics and strengthens the skin’s natural protection barrier. The formulation is spread throughout the entire outer skin layer instead of staying on the surface. It provides the skin with effective and long-lasting protection even against washing and other stresses. The formulation provides protection against irritants, and prevents contact allergy, dry skin and eczema. It moisturises intensively and helps the skin to maintain its moisture. Also suitable for those who often expose their body to liquids, cleaning agents or other irritants. Do not use if you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients in the product.

The After Sun Mousse was an item I thought no way I'll use as I don't do sun bathing anymore or major outdoor activities. However, it is the most delectable lightweight body moisturizer. It leaves no greasy or sticky feel on my skin and almost has a cooling feel when you apply it (no menthol though). It's quick to moisturize and stays on the skin meaning I'm not dry three hours later like with some body lotions. It's truly a unique body moisturizer style product. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. In the summertime this is fantastic as a soothing, super light body moisturizer. This one has aloe, cucumber, ginkgo and chamomile extracts plus the collagen, urea, silk, allantoin plus vitamin C and E. Details per EVY:

The unique technology distributes the mousse throughout the top layer of skin rather than staying on the surface. It creates an extra durable, long-lasting effect and doesn’t rinse or rub off. The formula creates a protective barrier that reinforces the skin’s natural defenses with a silky smooth feel. The mousse is suitable even after a shave and before bathing in chlorinated water or the sea. The ingredients are carefully selected to cool and soothe slightly sunburned and irritated skin. Gives intense hydration for up to 12 hours and helps your skin retain its tanned colour. It's even suitable to protect the hair from sun and water. The formula is enriched with vitamins C and E, silk extracts and collagen.

Ingredients Aqua. Butane. Propylene glycol. Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride. Urea. Palmitic acid. Isobutane. Stearic acid. PVP. Glycerin. Polysorbate 20. Propane. Allantoin. Aloe barbadensis leaf juice powder. Ginkgo biloba leaf extract. Cucumis melo Fruit Extract. Hydrolyzed silk. Anthemis nobilis flower extract. Tocopheryl acetate. Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate. Hydrolyzed Collagen. Dimethicone. Triethanolamine.

The UV/Heat Hair Mousse is the last item I've tried. It's what it says it is, a hair protectant mousse. Honestly it was my least favorite item I tried from the brand to date. It made my hair sticky no matter what I did. Maybe good for beach but not for everyday use. I don't really go to the beach anymore so it's not really my style of product. Maybe I used to much or didn't do it right but I just couldn't get it to really work for me. I think it would be worth trying if I was a more avid outdoor person or maybe used heat styling. I only air dry my hair and very very rarely use heat styling. Details per EVY:

An all in-one vitamin hair mousse that works both as UV/ heat protection and a volumising styling product. Thanks to UV filters developed for hair, it protects the hairs hydration and colour during sun exposure while protecting the hair from HEV light. The light formula conditions your hair without weighing it down, while providing volume and shine. Contains B3/5/6, E- and C-vitamins. Without perfumes and preservatives. Suitable for vegans.

Directions During sun exposure, apply all over wet or dry hair. Or use as a leave-in conditioner after shampooing, as protection from heated styling tools or as a volumising product, by applying all over the hair and combing through to evenly distribute the product. Do not rinse. Shake well before use, turn upside down and press gently.

Ingredients Aqua, Butane, Propylene Glycol, Alcohol Denat., Propane, Polyurethane-14, Isobutane, DimethylPABAmidopropyl Laurdimonium Tosylate, Oryza sativa (rice) bran oil, Brassica Oleracea Italica Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Extract, Niacinamide, Tocopheryl Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, AMP-Acrylates Copolymer, Polyquaternium-4, Laureth-4, Polysorbate 20, Panthenol, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Maltodextrin, Aminomethyl Propanol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Lycopene, Xanthophyll, Silica, Citric Acid.

In summary all products last 6 hours for sun protection, they're fragrance, alcohol and preservative free. They all share the same patented skin protection base. The blue cans are water resistant and between the two the kids version is slightly more tacky at first but you get more product for a similar price. The kids version is the most simple inci wise and it's the least moisturizing of them all. I would repurchase the kids one over the regular blue one at this point even though it's more tacky as you just get more bang for your buck. Now if I was outdoors all the time like in sports and wanted a daily face waterproof SPF then I might consider the regular Sunscreen Mousse as it has the added antioxidants. About the tacky part--Per the brand once it sets you can rub a little water on the skin and the sticky part goes away. I've tested this method out and it's true. My ultimate recommendation is to get the kids version which is a larger size. It's fantastic as a family outdoor sunscreen product.

The Daily Defense Face Mousse is the holy grail of sunscreens for me. It may be chemical but it's completely non-irritating for my rosacea skin. I've tried both the SPF 30 and SPF 50 and I prefer the SPF 50. The SPF 30 is slightly less sticky or firm but the difference is ultimately negligible for me in the long run. The SPF 50 version is where it's at. This may be hard for more oily types to use as it is moisturizing (though not greasy or heavy at all) but if you have more combo to dry and sensitive skin this is killer. I find the newer chemical filters way less irritating than the US approved versions. You need a golfball size for face and neck for this one. That's the application size. This one does not sting my eyes. It's utter perfection for me. Application is best when you rub the foam ball in the palms of your hands to liquefy it, then apply it to your face and body.

The body mousse is fantastic as a light body product and I will play with the Daily Repair Mousse more this winter to see how it holds up. I've decided tonight I'm going to try it as a barrier for my masks at work and see how it goes versus the oil stick. More to come on that. So now that I made you want to try the invisible no white cast, long lasting sunscreen, how do you get it? EVY is a pain in the butt to get in the US. Not going to lie. Normally you can get non-US approved filters from a variety of overseas websites but this is an aerosol which adds those shipping restrictions on top of having to get from a non-US retailer. So it's really hard to get. Currently there are only two choices: 50 ml and ifsogo. 50ml sells single cans but the prices are higher per can. Ifsogo is cheaper per bottle but you have to buy six cans to be eligible for US shipping. So go in with a friend or two at first like I did. Cult Beauty sells single cans (cheaper than 50 ml) but I've heard they have cancelled all US orders even though they're not blocking you from adding it to the cart. I got one can from Selfridges originally but seems they're not stocking it anymore either.

Personally I find their products innovative and really fantastic. I've tested the six hour claims and it seems to hold up. I love the ease of a six hour product plus it's really calming to the skin. It's a great combination. I learned to deal with the tacky part. Honestly the benefits outweigh the process. It's really a fantastic product that's worth hunting down. If you want easy sunscreen for the family on an outing, this is it. I don't use anything else for us outside now. EVY will always have a place in this house. It's honestly kicked quite a few other brands and products out the door since I discovered it a year or more ago. Some days when I get up I think to myself just reach for the EVY cause you adore it, but then I feel I have to test a new brand/SPF product so I skip EVY, then later I think you should've just gone for EVY cause you like it more.

*Some products were gifted by brand, I bought several cans on my own first and will continue to do so.
