Zelens Body Defense Sunscreen: Review

It's no secret I love Zelens skincare. I love their encapsulated Daily Defense Sunscreen. I talked about it here and here. They recently came out with a new Body Defense Sunscreen. This is a dry oil body sunscreen spray.

Per Zelens: The ultimate, silky-touch sunscreen oil formulated using superior micro-encapsulation technology to provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection (SPF 30). Enriched with powerful antioxidants, this advanced sun-defying formula reduces free radical formation and helps prevent sun damage. Replenishes moisture, reinforces the skin’s natural barrier and combats signs of premature skin aging. Leaves skin feeling smooth, supple and protected. May be used on the hair. Water-resistant (40 minutes). Dermatologist tested.

Benefits

  • Perfectly moisturising, provides high UV protection
  • Reduces formation of damaging free radicals
  • Temporarily delays premature skin ageing

The retail is $78 for 125mL. Zelens uses a superior micro-encapsulation technology. Organic UV filters are encapsulated in silica-based capsules, which are invisible in formulation and on skin. Body Defence offers a high, broad spectrum UV protection – SPF 30. However, encapsulated filters have a low chemical load since the encapsulation process prevents direct skin contact (encapsulated organic filters remain on top of the skin surface) resulting in a reduced dermal up-take and low allergy potential.
The base of this sunscreen is composed of molecules analogue to natural phospholipids in the skin.
Body Defence is formulated with multiple powerful active ingredients that work in synergy to reduce formation of damaging free radicals and help repair DNA.

Active Ingredients:

Phospholipids
Major building components in the structure of any cellular membrane essential for all vital physiological processes. These natural skin-identical ingredients demonstrate moisturising, restructuring and protective properties.
Glycolipids
Lipid molecules analogous to the intercellular lipids of stratum corneum (SC) demonstrate structuring, repairing and protective properties. Strengthen the barrier function and hydro-retaining capacity of skin.
Squalane
Derived from Mediterranean olive oil, this botanical lipid mimics human skin lipids in molecular structure to help replenish their natural levels lost through the normal aging process. Squalane nourishes and hydrates the skin, improves its elasticity and boosts the skin’s ability to naturally regenerate. It also acts as an antioxidant to protect the skin from damaging free radicals.
Sesame Seed Oil
This moisturising oil demonstrates strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to its healing properties it has been used for centuries to treat troubled skin. Contains many anti-aging ingredients to help prevent visible signs of skin aging.
Grape Seed Oil
Pressed from the seeds of grapes, this oil is rich in omega-6 and different antioxidants. It is an excellent moisturiser:  light and thin, grape seed oil is easily absorbed by the skin leaving it hydrated and nourished. Antioxidant properties provide protection against free radicals.
Soybeen sterols
Phytosterols derived from soybeans are lipid molecules with strong biomimetic and soothing properties. Structurally similar to skin natural lipids, these sterols moisturise skin, reduce water loss and strengthen natural barrier function.
Vitamin E
An antioxidant with a key role in the protection of cellular membranes from free radicals. It is the major antioxidant in the human epidermis with strong protective effects against UV-induced skin damage.
Botanical Antioxidant Complex
A proprietary botanical complex containing active molecules from 12 different plants:  Shiso (Perilla frutescens), Green tea (Camellia sinensis), Centella  (Centella asiatica), Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), Pine (Pinus Strobus), Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia), Golden root (Rhodiola rosea), Carrot (Daucus carota), Milk thistle (Silybum marianum), Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis).
The following active molecules were extracted from the plants:

  • Rosmarinic acid (from Shiso)
  • Polyphenol Epigallocatechin gallate, EGCG (from Green tea)
  • Cichoric acid (from Echinacea)
  •  Pycogenol (from Pine)
  • Glycoside- Asiaticoside (from Centella)
  • Flavonoids (from Ginkgo)
  • Polyphenols (from Golden root)
  • Beta-carotene (from Carrot)
  • Silymarin (from Milk thistle)
  • Curcumin (from Turmeric)
  • Astragalosides and flavonoids (from Astragalus)
  • Polypheols Ellagitannins (from Emblica)

Botanical antioxidant complex demonstrates strong antioxidant activity to help reduce formation of hazardous free radicals and oxidative damage.
Tropical Fern (Polypodium Iectomos)
Used for centuries for the treatment of different skin diseases. Demonstrates anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Boosts skin immune system.
Blend of essential oils
This natural blend contains: Thyme oil, Clary Sage oil, Lime oil, Lemon oil, Ginger oil, Bergamot oil, Cardamom oil, Petitgrain oil, Litsea Cubeba oil, Galbanum oil.

I find this to be like any dry body oil. It's not super greasy nor super dry. It absorbs quickly. It has no major scent. It's a smaller bottle so it won't last a long time if you use it on your whole body daily. It's also a pricey sunscreen, but it's Zelens so you expect that. I bought it to use on my arms mainly. I've loved it so far for that. I would buy it again because it's easy and serves it's purpose well.
